How Does Laughing Improve Health?

Cultures around the world dating to ancient times have believed in laughter as good medicine. Ancient Romans & Greeks claimed laughter reduced stress, brought balance to emotional health and lowered symptoms of illness. Some cultures even thought laughing cleansed the spirit and negative vibes. The Chinese have a few proverbs about laughter and worry, and of course the bible's Proverb says: a cheerful heart is good medicine.

Laughing is good medicine, and having a good laugh will immediately cause changes to your mental, physical, and emotional state. You'll be able to feel these changes the more you laugh in that moment.

  • LOL (laugh out loud) laughter makes you breathe in more oxygen which improves blood flow/circulation. Therefore your muscles, lungs, and heart get more oxygen which helps them function better.

  • Laughing releases endorphins, the "feel good" hormones. You feel lighter like your stress & burdens are melting away. Don't you feel happier, and in a better mood?

  • Laughter decreases stress and the stress hormone cortisol, and decreases heart rate & blood pressure.

  • A study of older adults showed that watching a funny show for at least 20 minutes improved their ability to think, learn, and remember.

If you're interested in learning ways to find humor and really get into the funny business, there's a few things you need to know.

#1. First - there's always a class clown, a funny guy, or a story teller in every group. Gravitate towards these people. Listen in.... and join the laughter.

If it turns ugly, like making harmful or racist comments about somebody, or inappropriate sexual comments - it's no longer funny. That's when I leave the room.

#2. Second - generally being aware of what's happening around you - a mild form of people & animal watching - can provide you with plenty of laughable moments. Young children & animals especially are often hilarious, and they don't even know it. Keep your phone's camera on hand.
